Tasmania diving

Weedy sea dragon

Following on from our Red Sea trip last month, the next time I anticipate donning a tank will be early in the new year when we are planning to visit Tasmania.

The trip has two main purposes: (i) to visit some friends of ours whoe live there and (ii) get some video of some sea dragons!

I’ve started trawling the web for details of dive shops and sites. Dive Tasmania has some very nice downloadable PDFs, including a detailed Dive Trail map.

There are also links to a selection of dive operators (which I’ve collected here on del.icio.us). However, a number of the sites seem to be down – odd.

Of the ones that are up, I’m rather suspicious that I can’t find any mention of water temperature! A google search led me to a page on BigBlueWater.com that has all the gory detail:

Sea surface temperature

Hmmm. Not exactly the best news. However, there must be compensations. Here’s David Doubilet talking on CNN about Tasmania diving:

Tasmania is wonderful. It’s deep, and cold and rich, and strange animals. You dive at the base of huge cliffs. The wind from the southern ocean blows across the top of the cliffs, so the water’s calm beneath it. But in that calm, clear water, there’s things you can’t imagine, fish with hands.
