The Watchman

The Watchman

October 2009

The Watchman sits by the entrance to the main section of Zion National Park in southern Utah. This image was taken from a bridge crossing the Virgin River. It is the only location I’ve found that appears to have specific road markings for photographers, dividing up spaces on the south side of the bridge for this classic view.

I lined up the previous evening and had run into Colorado photographer Erik Stensland, both of us some 600 miles from home. That sunrise was full of potential that didn’t materialize – a clearing storm, but the sun blocked to the west.

However, the next evening – the day this image was captured – delivered in some style.
