It seems Vilivaru’s natural charms don’t generate enough profit, for the owners have seen fit recently to start a land reclamation project that destroys the island’s character and no doubt trashes the environment in the process.
Reclamation completed to the north of the house reef and the reeftop scraped bare to the south, presumably in readiness for a further reclamation…

At a site named Spiral Corner in Wakatobi, one of our fellow divers, Eva, discovered an octopus that apparently made his home in a small coral head covered by leather corals.
We watched him a good while, an he in turn watched us. Eventually, he decided it was time to up periscope, as you can see in the video…

I can’t quite recall where I stumbled across DiveFilm PodCast Video, but I must admit that I hadn’t quite expected ever to find an underwater video podcast.
It seems that Divefilm.com has been up and running for some years, presenting some fantastic quality footage by some of the best underwater videographers around…

A timely follow-up on the subject of computer mapping: Google have released a beta of Google Earth 4. If you haven’t tried Google Earth, you seriously must: it’s one of the best web-enabled applications you can buy (except it’s free, of course!).

Armed with my trusty copy of Google Maps Hacks and recent copy of .NET magazine, I’ve added some Google Maps magic to the site.

Tim Sheerman-Chase has listed out every dive centre you might ever need in and around Dahab, Egypt and included them on Google Maps. (He also has some great videos on YouTube) …

When I first bought an underwater video housing last year, I ordered the kit by telephone from Cameras Underwater here in the UK. After looking at a few housings in the showroom in central London, we’d decided that Ikelite looked like an attractive way to go (on the basis of cost, simplicity and availability).
The one thing I wasn’t at all sure of when ordering was what size flight case we’d need to house all the kit…

Another video from our April trip to Wakatobi. The videos I posted already concentrated on the various critters we saw, as opposed to the reefs themselves. And that’s a shame, as the reefs in this part of the world are amongst the finest I’ve ever seen. This clip aims to make up for that omission by concentrating on the reefs themselves.

Following on from our Red Sea trip last month, the next time I anticipate donning a tank will be early in the new year when we are planning to visit Tasmania.
The trip has two main purposes: (i) to visit some friends of ours whoe live there and (ii) get some video of some sea dragons!
